The City University of New York is quietly staging a cultural takeover beyond the confines of a traditional lecture hall. With a massive footprint of 247,000 students spanning 26 colleges across the five boroughs, CUNY has always been the literal heartbeat of New York City. Now, the university is leaning heavily into that foundational identity with “NYC by CUNY” Spring ’26 collection, an exclusive streetwear range that evolves the campus bookstore merchandise to reflect authentic New York subculture. With this collection, CUNY is embedding itself into the local fashion ecosystem, proving that higher education can actively speak the visual language of the streets it calls home.

At its core, this drop is rooted in localized storytelling and everyday New York nostalgia. The standout is a dark graphic tee featuring a meticulously detailed NYC bodega facade, complete with a legendary bodega cat and all 26 college names hidden inside the store signs. For those who grew up on early-2000s East Coast hip-hop, a charcoal metallic tee pays direct homage to the iconic, iridescent rap styling of Queensbridge legend Nas. The rest of the capsule balances this raw energy with premium academic staples, including a heavily washed denim tote bag engineered for students on the move, an NYC souvenir-inspired cream ringer tee, and contrasting crewnecks. There’s one in an ultra-clean forest camo and another in a classic red plaid that bridges the gap between ivy league prestige and concrete streetwear.

What makes this project culturally resonant is in the authenticity of its execution. CUNY handed the keys of the entire production over to its own community. The capsule was designed by Baruch College alumni Milton Gordon and Vera Rilossi (who also graduated from BMCC), captured through the lens of Hunter College alum Stanley Ligon, and modeled entirely by actual, current students. Even the editorial lookbook locations were selected with deep cultural intent: the crewnecks were shot amidst the historic architectural woodwork of Baruch’s Oak Room to respect academic tradition, while other pieces were photographed on campus at Lehman College to pay respect to the Bronx—a place that birthed hip-hop music and helped introduced streetwear culture.

Ultimately, “NYC by CUNY” matters because it validates the identity of the real New York. It’s a love letter to a student body where half of the undergraduates come from households earning under $30,000 USD a year, and 71% are the first in their families to ever attend college.

CUNY represents the ultimate beacon of social mobility, where 82% of freshmen are products of the city’s public school system, and another 82% stick around after graduation to build the future of the five boroughs. By trading stuffy academic pretension for genuine cultural currency, CUNY is executing a beautiful mission of giving hardworking, first-generation New Yorkers the elevated, culturally rich representation they’ve earned.
