Thompson was scheduled to earn $17.5 million USD in the final year of his deal with the Mavericks, who finished 26-56 last season. Following the announcement of his buyout, Miami immediately made Thompson a primary target to address their perimeter shooting needs. The move follows the Heat's blockbuster acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, pairing Thompson's floor spacing with Antetokounmpo and star center Bam Adebayo.
