JOURNAL STANDARD relume has reengineered the Barbour Solway Zipper into a special-order jacket that reworks the archive piece from the fabric up. Rather than a straight reissue, the relume version, dubbed the Solway Zipper Modify, targets three parts of the original's build to move it toward daily city wear.
The most significant change is the shell. relume swaps the original's waxed construction for a non-oiled cotton-nylon blend, a high-density weave that reads lighter on the body and skips the tackiness of a traditional oiled finish. The result is a jacket that can be worn on a packed train or in a car seat without the upkeep and transfer that come with waxed cotton. The mix runs 75 cotton and 25% nylon on the outer, with a full cotton lining and a cotton collar.
The cut is the second focus. relume drops the original's longer line and its waist belt, resizing the jacket into a mid-length that sits just past the hip. The looser proportion is built to layer, clearing enough room to sit over a thick knit without pulling, and the shorter hem stays out of the way when seated. It reframes the Solway Zipper as an everyday outer piece rather than a structured countryside coat.
The third addition is a hem drawcord. Cinching the spindle at the base pulls the silhouette into a rounder, more contemporary shape, giving the wearer control over how boxy or tapered the jacket sits. Together the three moves shift the piece toward a relaxed, adjustable fit.
The heritage detailing survives the overhaul. relume keeps the functional pocket layout, including a left-chest flap pocket and roomy gusseted pockets at the front. The corduroy collar fastens with a chin strap to stand up when needed, and the house-check lining shows at the cuff when the sleeves are rolled. Finish separates the three colorways: Black runs the collar in matching black for a cleaner urban read, Natural pairs a camel collar with the check lining in a lighter palette, and Khaki sets a brown collar against a classic sage green.
The JOURNAL STANDARD relume x Barbour Solway Zipper Modify is available to pre-order now.
