Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have officially cast Dave Bautista to star as Kratos in the upcoming God of War TV series. The Guardians of the Galaxy actor takes over the lead role following an onset injury to previous lead Ryan Hurst.

Hurst, who was initially cast as Kratos in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep during filming in Vancouver that required surgery and would have delayed restarting production into 2027. Recasting the role allows production to resume in the coming weeks, though all previously completed scenes featuring Hurst will now be reshot. Prime Video has issued a two-season order for the live-action adaptation, with both seasons scheduled to shoot back-to-back.

Written and showrun by Ronald D. Moore under his Tall Ship Productions banner, the series adapts the storyline of the Norse pantheon video games. The plot centers on Kratos and his ten-year-old son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson, as they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. The cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Danny Woodburn alongside Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, with Frederick E.O. Toye directing the first two episodes.

Production on God of War is expected to officially resume in Vancouver in the coming weeks.
