The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 ($170), with its wider toebox and a snappy ride, quickly became one of my new favorite shoes. It’s a rare shoe that gives my toes room to relax while still convincing me to run faster than planned.

La Sportiva has built a strong reputation in mountain running, and the Prodigio 2 fits right into that lineage. The day they arrived, I laced them up and headed out for an easy four-mile trail jog with 1,000 feet of climbing. The miles clicked quicker than planned, and I found myself picking up the pace without really thinking about it — a welcome change from my usual slower pace these days. During steep power hiking and quicker descents, the shoe felt effortless and well balanced with excellent traction on our local loose decomposed granite switchbacks.

Although this marked my first dance with the Prodigio 2, I had previously worn through two pairs of the La Sportiva Akasha II (review) and loved them for their cushion and durability. Compared to the Akasha II, the Prodigio 2 offers a wider, more spacious toebox with a firmer, less cushioned ride. It feels better suited for faster trail workouts and improved ground feel. Sitting between the plush La Sportiva Prodigio Max (review) and performance-oriented La Sportiva Prodigio Pro (review), the Prodigio 2 blends soft cushioning with lively rebound that keeps me feeling fresh and steady from short, easy recovery runs to uphill intervals to quad-destroying downhill tempo runs.

Updates from the original La Sportiva Prodigio (review) include a wider toebox and an updated XFlow midsole, providing softer cushioning without compromising on durability and reliable stability for daily runs.

The Prodigio 2 features 34-millimeter heel and 28-millimeter forefoot stack heights, resulting in a 6-millimeter drop. The shoe has an actual weight of 9.9 ounces (290 grams) for a U.S. men’s 9.5 (functional equivalent of a men’s 9). La Sportiva shoes run a half size small compared to most other brands, so you’ll want to size up. The shoe is relatively lightweight while still delivering the protection, durability, and traction typically associated with heavier daily trainers.

La Sportiva Prodigio 2 Upper

La Sportiva Prodigio 2 - lateral
The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 upper is made of a breathable AirMesh that has proven durable.

The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 upper is constructed with recycled high-tenacity AirMesh. I found that the upper breathes well in most conditions, although initially my feet felt slightly warm on runs above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 C). Looking back, that likely had more to do with a lack of heat acclimatization coming out of winter running because recent hot runs have not bothered me much. After 175 miles, the upper has proven its durability with no rips or tears, just a little extra embedded dirt.

The shoe includes a minimally padded tongue held in place with a mid-foot wrap that provides a bit of extra stability through the midfoot. A TPU mudguard and toe cap cover the front of the shoe and extend toward the fifth metatarsal for added protection. The thicker recycled laces stayed secure with a standard double knot. As a runner who values the great outdoors, I appreciated seeing recycled materials integrated throughout the shoe, from the upper mesh and TPU reinforcements to the laces.

The lockdown around the midfoot is secure yet accommodating, like my favorite pair of lucky race socks that support through the arch without giving the feet a death grip. Moving forward through the midfoot, the shoe opens up nicely, offering ample toe room in one of the more generous toe boxes I’ve come across. As a runner with a wider forefoot, these kicks are fantastic for toe splay without feeling boxy or clunky. The heel lockdown could use a little fine tuning. At times, during a combo uphill and downhill interval workout, the heel felt slightly loose until I dialed in the upper laces just right. Overall, the upper felt snug through the midfoot while still being pleasantly roomy through the toe box, highly durable yet breathable, and ready to let my feet do their work.

La Sportiva Prodigio 2 Midsole

The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 has a new XFlow EVA midsole.

The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 midsole strikes an ideal balance between cushioning and trail feel. La Sportiva updated the shoe with its nitrogen-infused XFlow EVA foam, creating a ride soft enough for daily training while maintaining responsiveness for faster efforts and longer outings.

For my first Oregon coast getaway of the year, I decided to pack only the Prodigio 2. In addition to using them on trails, I also wore them for a 16-mile flat road run since I was in the midst of marathon training. While not my first choice for long, flat road runs, they handled the pavement better than expected. I finished feeling good, with no blisters, and would happily reach for them again anytime I want to travel light with just one pair of running shoes.

The Prodigio 2 has a heel stack height of 34 millimeters and 28 millimeters at the forefoot with a middle-of-the-road 6-millimeter drop. There’s enough padding that even on chunky gravel fire roads, I never felt rocks underfoot.

La Sportiva Prodigio 2 Outsole

The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 outsole uses FriXion Red rubber and 4-millimeter lugs.

The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 outsole continues La Sportiva’s reputation for mountain-ready traction. Its proprietary FriXion Red outsole places a more durable rubber under the heel and a grippier one under the mid and forefoot for confident footing across varied terrain.

I tested the shoe on some of the steepest trails in the Ashland, Oregon area, including a particularly steep section that gains more than 800 feet in a mile over loose granite covered in ponderosa pine needles. The outsole never slipped or lost traction. The 4-millimeter lugs gripped well on loose granite, wet leaves, and rolling singletrack throughout the spring.

La Sportiva Prodigio 2 Overall Impressions

The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 shines as a versatile daily trainer that blends comfort, traction, and durability into a surprisingly lightweight package. The updated fit opens up the forefoot for a roomier toebox while still providing a surefooted feel on technical terrain, while the softer cushioning keeps the ride flowing without sacrificing responsiveness or protection underfoot.

What stood out most was just how versatile this shoe felt across every type of run. I kept reaching for it for everything from quick singletrack sessions to three-hour mountain outings with more than 4,000 feet of climbing. The outsole gripped confidently on steep climbs, loose terrain, and rolling trails, while the durable construction handled heavy wear without issue. Whether heading out for an easy recovery run or a long Pacific Crest Trail adventure, the Prodigio 2 delivers a fluid, confident ride with dependable traction every step of the way.
