正文提要

Gemological Science International (GSI) has issued its first pigeon blood report in India, in a move to introduce recognized color trade names for gemstones at its Jaipur and Mumbai labs.

Rubies will be noted as pigeon blood, and sapphires as royal blue and padparadscha, the organization said Tuesday. The report is only for untreated gems; all enhanced stones are excluded regardless of their color.

Each trade name is based on scientifically established criteria, including specific ranges of hue, tone and saturation, evaluated under standardized lightning, and supported by spectroscopic and colorimetric analysis, the group added.

One of the new GSI certificates.

The criteria are consistent across all GSI laboratories through shared master reference sets, calibrated equipment and proficiency testing. As a result, a gemstone assessed in Jaipur would receive the same determination at any GSI laboratory. For the trade in India, this launch provides a local alternative to sending fine gemstones overseas, reducing costs, transit risks and delays.

“Jaipur has cut and traded the world’s finest rubies and sapphires for generations, yet a stone finished here has always had to travel abroad to carry a name like pigeon blood. That ends today,” said global head gemologist Meenu Brijesh Vyas. “It is a matter of real pride that the first laboratory in India to define these names is doing so from the city that has shaped these stones for centuries – the expertise was always here, and now the authority is too.”

The service is currently available at GSI laboratories in Jaipur, Mumbai, New York and Bangkok.
