Summary

Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose's graphic novel 'Get Jiro' is becoming an animated series premiering October 3 on Adult SwimThe DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation project stars Brian Tee as Jiro, alongside Titus Welliver, Alison Pill and Justin KirkThe series arrives with a violent first trailer and a near-future premise where diners kill for a seat at the best restaurants

The late Anthony Bourdain's Get Jiro is heading to television, with the animated adaptation of the late chef's graphic novels set to premiere October 3 on Adult Swim. The series lands as part of the network's Toonami anime and action block, airing late that night at midnight before streaming the following day on HBO Max, and it arrives alongside a bloody first trailer.

Set in a near-future Los Angeles, Get Jiro imagines a city where dining has curdled into something lethal, with customers willing to resort to murder just to lock down a table at the most coveted restaurants. At the center is Jiro, a mysterious sushi chef bent on revenge, voiced by Brian Tee of Chicago Med. The trailer wastes little time establishing the tone, down to the title character making clear exactly how much he despises soy sauce.

The material comes straight from Bourdain's own imagination. The half-hour project, from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, adapts the New York Times best-selling DC/Vertigo graphic novels that Bourdain wrote with Joel Rose, with artwork by Langdon Foss and Alé Garza, the first of which was published in 2012. Bringing it to screen are developers Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who co-wrote the A24 feature Sharper and produced NBC's Superstore, with Tanaka, Gatewood, Jordan Blum and Sam Register serving as executive producers. Rounding out the voice cast alongside Tee are Titus Welliver of Bosch: Legacy, Alison Pill of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Justin Kirk of Weeds.

"We at Adult Swim were huge fans of Bourdain and Rose's graphic novels, so when our partners at WBA first mentioned it, we were all in," said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, framing the adaptation as a natural fit for the network. He added that, "Like everything Bourdain did, this story starts with food and then generously reaches out into all directions to cover culture, obsession and what makes humanity problematic but, in the end, inspiring. What you get is a wildly original, cinematic series, the kind of thing that we feel is right at home on Adult Swim."
