Neil Druckmann confirmed that Naughty Dog has stepped away from the creative direction of HBO's adaptation of "The Last of Us"The acclaimed studio maintains stewardship of the hit franchise with multiple undisclosed gaming projects actively in the worksDruckmann is currently focused on co-directing and co-writing a new title called "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet"

Speaking recently to the Washington Post, Neil Druckmann set the record straight on where Naughty Dog stands with the hit television adaptation of its flagship property. While the game director previously served as the co-creator and co-showrunner of the HBO series alongside Craig Mazin, Druckmann formally announced his departure from the television show in 2025. He confirmed that both he and the studio were uninvolved in shaping the creative direction for the upcoming season of The Last of Us, which is scheduled to return to screens in 2027.

Stepping back from the television spotlight does not mean the studio is abandoning the property. Druckmann affirmed the developer's continued ownership of the franchise, stating that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog remains the steward of the IP. Driving the point home to fans, Druckmann guaranteed the franchise's continuation by declaring that while this adaptation might end, the team is not done with the series. He teased that the studio currently has a couple projects in the works that he remains excited to discuss when the time is right.

While those mystery titles develop in secrecy, the studio is pushing boundaries on its upcoming slate. Druckmann and Naughty Dog are currently deep into active development on a brand-new project titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Bringing his focus back to the native gaming medium, Druckmann is serving a dual role by co-directing and co-writing the new title.

This internal focus marks a pivot for the developer after Naughty Dog previously canceled a massive and highly anticipated multiplayer project set within the franchise universe. Druckmann had hinted that a third game in the franchise was in the works. Now, with a new console generation looming and the television show boosting popularity, the studio is positioned to capitalize on the renewed cultural demand for its signature prestige single-player entries.
